Memorial Trees - $500
"Perhaps nature is our best assurance of immortality."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
A tree is a recognized symbol of nature’s strength and splendor in local parks. Most people respond to the presence of trees beyond simply observing their beauty. People of all ages may feel serene, peaceful, restful and tranquil in a grove of trees.
Planting trees enhance our local environment for future generations by:
Allowing for Species Diversification
Stabilizing the Soil & Preventing Erosion
Providing Food & Shelter for Wildlife
Supplying Oxygen & Improving Air Quality
Offering Shade & Enriching Aesthetics
Young trees in diameter of 2-3 inches are planted in the spring and the fall depending upon the appropriate planting season for the selected species.
Applications are due in early May for a spring planting and in early September for the fall planting. The District reserves the right to move or replace a tree.
Please note that due to liability concerns, visitors are not allowed in parks during planting of trees. The District requests that you refrain from spreading ashes at the tree site.
Tree Type Selection
A Memorial Tree will be chosen in consultation with Park District staff who will adhere to the District's Tree Planting Plan. A tree may be selected from a variety of species chosen for the beauty of its growth and colors. The type of tree selected is based on park location and nursery stock. Each tree will be maintained in accordance with the District’s tree maintenance program. Trees will be closely monitored and professionally maintained by the Park District.
If you wish to purchase a Memorial Tree to be placed at a park site, email the District's Arborist to begin the process.
If you wish to purchase a Memorial Tree to be place at Pottawatomie Golf Course, email the Golf Course Superintendent to begin the process.
Memorial Tree Recognition
Memorial Trees in the District's parks and at the golf course are commemorated with a complimentary recognition aluminum plaque, size 6 inches wide by 4 inches tall, with a silver background and black inscription. Markers are mounted on a concrete footing near the tree.
Inscriptions typically include your loved one’s name or name of your event and some special wording from you. You will submit your inscription after speaking with a staff member.
Other types of plaques are not allowed. Recognition plates, markers and/or plaques will be installed within 90 days of each seasonal tree plantings and will be maintained for up to 10 years.
Memorial Benches - $1600
Benches line the trails and dot the wide-open spaces of the St. Charles community’s parks as a loving memory and peaceful reminder to stay and enjoy the awe of nature.
A Memorial Bench purchase includes a six-foot long bench, a concrete bench pad and installation. Benches are made with a steel-contoured seat, aluminum cast ornate frame and a glossy UltraCoat finish. Benches are ordered by Park District staff. Please allow up to 90 days for installation of the bench, weather permitting. Benches are installed between March and October. The District reserves the right to move or replace a bench.
If you wish to purchase a Memorial Bench, email the Assistant Superintendent of Parks to begin the process.
Bronze plaques are optional, typically cost a minimum of $300 and can be purchased through your choice of supplier. For best results, a plaque should be ordered at the time the bench is donated so that it can be set in the wet concrete pad at the time of installation.
